DIALOGUE ON REGIONAL AND GLOBAL EFFORTS TO ADVANCE THE ANTI-CORRUPTION AGENDA IN AFRICA |
Nairobi, Kenya 19-20 June 2023 — Following up on the regional dialogue in Latin America on regional and global efforts to advance the anti-corruption agenda for CSOs, Youth and Academia, the UNODC’s GRACE initiative conducted the second regional dialogue in Africa together with UNODC’s Regional Offices in East Africa, North Africa, Southern Africa and West Africa.
Over 30 participants from Burkina Faso, Burundi, Côte d’Ivoire, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Madagascar, Nigeria, Somalia, Tanzania, Uganda, South Africa, Zimbabwe gathered in Nairobi to discuss and come up with recommendations on how civil society, academia and youth in the African continent can play a stronger role in the implementation of United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC).
The recommendations from the three dialogues – the third dialogue will be held for stakeholders from Asia and Europe – will be presented at the Conference of State Parties (CoSP) to the Convention at its tenth session, to be hosted by the United States of America in December 2023.
During the Africa dialogue, lively discussions were held and topics discussed, included, the importance of value-based education at all levels of to instill values of ethics and integrity, or the necessity to improve communication and coordination between the various actors and to work better in coalitions across Africa, and the importance of identifying the role of corruption in exacerbating poverty and hunger across the continent. The participants concluded that without addressing corruption, it will not be possible to achieve the SDGs by 2030.


Following the regional dialogue for Africa, 17 young people from all over Africa gathered to put together their African Youth Anti-Corruption 2030 Vision. The vision is a collective effort bringing together anti-corruption priorities of the African youth, namely corruption as it affects unemployment, education, weak governance, crime and violence and health. It is their hope that this document will support the achievement of the SDGs by stressing the importance of preventing and countering corruption.
At the end of the event, young people gathered and planted 20 trees in the UN office in Nairobi, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the UNCAC, celebrated in 2023, symbolising their hope for a future free of corruption.
