GLOBAL CONFERENCE ON HARNESSING DATA TO IMPROVE CORRUPTION MEASUREMENT

Measuring Corruption | Catalyzing Change

Vienna, Austria | hybrid format | 31 August - 1 September 2023

Measuring corruption is essential for understanding its causes, consequences and trends, as well as for designing and evaluating effective responses. By developing reliable and comparable indicators and data, we can enhance transparency, accountability and evidence-based policymaking in the fight against corruption.

From 31 August to 1 September 2023, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the International Anti-Corruption Academy (IACA) and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) joined forces in hosting the first Global Conference on Harnessing Data to Improve Corruption Measurement. The conference was held in hybrid format in Vienna, Austria.

The conference brought together policymakers, scientists, practitioners and experts from governments, civil society and academia, to provide a forum to exchange knowledge, experiences and good practices in measuring corruption and the impact of anti-corruption measures.

Through interactive panels, experts discussed topics such as the development of a UN statistical framework to measure corruption, user-centred approaches to measurement or the use of technology in the collection, analysis and use of data.

Outcome document

The conference produced the “Vienna Principles Towards a Global Framework for the Measurement of Corruption” to guide the way forward in the development and implementation of corruption measurement frameworks and methodologies to achieve greater accuracy, reliability and usefulness, leading to more effective anti-corruption strategies and policies.
